About the magnificent 2015 vintage in Burgundy:

The word is out about the magnificent 2015 vintage in Burgundy. And today we have the privilege of offering our clients a terrific estate-bottled, hand-harvested 2015 red Burgundy. It’s from the great Cote Chalonnaise appellation of Mercurey, and it’s made by the impressive Domaine Jean-Michel et Laurent Pillot .

The critics have spoken. They seem to be trying to outdo each other in praising the Burgundy wines from the remarkable 2015 vintage. Arrowine’s Burgundy insider, Doug Rosen, was recently in Burgundy to evaluate the wines. Here are his thoughts:

“It’s not hype. It’s all true. The 2015s are the most complete, lush and forward reds from Burgundy I’ve ever tasted. They’re so precocious and utterly delicious they’ll be hard to resist on release. But don’t let the opulent fruit fool you; they’ll keep too. And they won’t close down like the 2005s. They have the upfront fruit of Oregon’s finest combined with the lacy, filigreed minerality that only comes from Burgundy. Wow! Take out a second mortgage!” Doug Rosen, Arrowine

Allen Meadows of Burghound.com has written extensively about the great 2015 vintage. If you’re a Burgundy enthusiast, I encourage you to subscribe and read all he has to say. Here’s just a small part of what he wrote, that I think captures his general thoughts on the quality of the vintage :

2015 – A Great Vintage, Indeed the Greatest Since the Legendary 2005  …Hot and dry worked in 2015 because it is a genuinely great vintage and it’s a great vintage from top to bottom. In fact, in all my years of visiting Burgundy I have never seen a better vintage for wines at the bottom of the appellation hierarchy. To be sure, it’s great at the top as well but if ever there was a vintage to explore for value, it’s this one. I have never listed so many Top Value choices in the 17 years that I have been publishing Burghound and I was more severe than usual in my choices!…”  Allen Meadows, Burghound.com #65, Jan. 2017.

And here are just some of the comments on the vintage from Stephen Tanzer of Vinous (again, there’s far more detail available at Vinous.com):

The 2015 Red Burgundies: You Are So Going To Want Them  … [M]y extensive tastings of this vintage from barrel and tank during late autumn made it clear that this will be one of the half-dozen top vintages for red Burgundy of the past generation. The vintage’s standout wines—and there are a lot of them in 2015—offer a rare combination of succulent deep fruit, mouthfilling density of texture, ripe fine-grained tannins, and enough energy to ensure at least mid-term ageability. In terms of their consistent quality and broad appeal, 2015 will be a difficult vintage to top.”

Famed writer and Master of Wine Clive Coates wrote:

“All the way from the Côte d’Or down to the Mâconnais the fruit was in splendid condition. Michel Lafarge reported that he has rarely seen such magnificent grapes, and his comments have been echoed by others. Aromas in the cellars are intoxicating. Prices, however seem destined to be high; perhaps the highest in real terms that they have ever been.”

Because of the high quality, high demand and low production volumes, collectors and wine lovers are snapping up the 2015s fast. Even with many wines priced higher, they will not last. Don’t get shut out. If you’re a fan of red Burgundy, the time is now to check your cellar and make sure you have space for a stockpile of 2015s.

And if you want great 2015 red Burgundy that isn’t high priced and that keeps your budget intact, it will be hard to top this 2015 Mercurey red from Domaine Pillot. Our E-mail Sale means you can get it for as little as $19.99 per bottle. Call soon, though, supplies are strictly limited.

Why Burgundy?

Red Burgundy is, perhaps, the most beloved wine in the world. These wines somehow combine elegance and delicacy with substance and presence like no other wines can. There are no better wines made from the cherished pinot noir variety in the world than those from Burgundy.

Burgundy proves it at the highest level by making 100% pinot noir reds that are the most expensive wines in the world. The 2014 Romanee Conti Grand Cru sells for over $12,000 per bottle. And the 2015 is likely to go up! Burgundy also proves it at price levels for the rest of us with wines like the 2015 Pillot Mercurey you can order today.

You can order this beautiful, 100% pinot noir, “Village” level Burgundy for as little as $19.99 per bottle. Compare the quality of this Mercurey to the best pinot noirs under $30 from California, Oregon and New Zealand. It’s clear, this pure, expressive, textured and elegant wine offers some of the best pinot noir value in the world.

 About Domaine Pillot:

Brothers Jean-Michel and Laurent Pillot are the fifth generation of the Pillot family to make wine from their outstanding vineyards in and around the tiny village of Mellecey. This is a top spot in the Mercurey appellation of Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise.  Just like the best Côte d’ Or red Burgundies, this Burgundy red is 100% pinot noir. This estate-bottled red Burgundy comes from some of Mercurey’s finest “Village” level vineyards near the village of Mercurey.

The Pillot’s are leaders of an exciting quality movement in the Cote Chalonnaise, and especially around Mercurey, Givry and Rully. Top producers here are now focusing on quality, low-yields, precision wine making, and clean, pure, fabulously expressive wines just like top producers in the Cote d’Or, a little to the north, where the wines regularly cost more than double.

The work of the Pillot brothers is legendary. Their standards at harvest are so demanding that some workers refuse to work for them. They won’t change their rigorous standards for grape quality, though. It means that they only allow top quality fruit into their updated, beautifully-vaulted, 13th and 17th Century cellars that they use as a winery.

About the 2015 Pillot Mercurey:

This excellent red Burgundy shows the depth, body, richness, vibrancy, texture and quality that make 2015 a special vintage throughout Burgundy. The fabulous price makes it a top pinot noir value from the great 2015 vintage. And our special e-mail sale means that you can get this terrific find at over 33% off the regular price.

This comes from outstanding estate-owned vineyard sites near the village of Mercurey.  Aromatic, flavorful, and sappy textured, it’s a wonderful match for poultry or pork, or a steak dinner. It would be riveting with rotisserie chicken or even with grilled salmon. Gentle use of oak (mostly neutral, only a small amount of new oak) only enhances the flavors and textures.  This is a bargain that will shame many great pinot noirs from Oregon, New Zealand and California. Other pinots cost far more but don’t deliver as much character and charm.

Here’s how it tastes:  This bright ruby red colored Burgundy has beautifully pure and expressive aromas of strawberry tarts and ripe morello cherries. The palate combines pure ripe red berry and black cherry fruit, red licorice, sweet spice, subtle black tea, sappy texture, and great length. The finish is pure, palate-coating and long. You’ll love the classic Mercurey flavors of sweet red fruit and spice. Wonderful now, this will age gracefully for 4-5 more years.

Again, to order just call either Arrowine location. We’re at 703-525-0990 (Arlington, VA) or 202-785-0785 (Washington, DC). Please call the location where you’d like to pick up your order. The wine arrives tomorrow, Friday, July 7th. Sale prices are good for one week.

Thank you for taking the time to read about the Pillot brothers and their outstanding Mercurey red Burgundy from the great 2015 vintage.
