2015 Red Burgs from Pommard favorite Domaine Gabriel Billard
Burgundy winemaker Claudie Jobard has been an Arrowine favorite for years. So was her mother, Laurence Jobard. And now Claudie is becoming a full-fledged superstar in Burgundy. Top Burgundy Domaines have picked her to make their wines, including Grand Crus selling for several hundred dollars per bottle. Yet she still makes the wines for her family’s tiny Pommard estate, Domaine Gabriel Billard. These are gorgeous wines!
Today our E-mail Sale features TWO fabulous 2015 vintage single-vineyard Pommards from Domaine Gabriel Billard:
- One is from 55+ year old vines in the terrific villages level “Les Vaumuriens” vineyard located just above the world-famous Pommard 1er Cru “Les Rugiens” vineyard.
- The other is from 80+ year old vines in the exceptional, mid-slope Pommard 1er Cru “Les Charmots” vineyard.
Both are distinctive, deep, complex, long and gorgeous red Burgundies made from 100% pinot noir. Each wine is from the exceptional 2015 vintage (more below). These great red Burgundies have a loyal following. Both, though, are made and sold in tiny quantities. We expect them to sell out, so please don’t wait to order.

Burgundy lovers have been waiting for this e-mail. The red Burgundies from Domaine Billard have become serious sensations at Arrowine in the dozen vintages we have worked with the wines from this amazing family estate. The wines available today, from the great 2015 vintage, are some of the greatest wines we’ve ever had from this estate, and that’s not a small complement!
Wine lovers should be stockpiling 2015 red Burgundies. The vintage is sensational. These Pommards are among the very best wines you’ll find from the Côtes de Beaune at the village and 1er Cru level. The reasonable prices make them some of Burgundy’s fines values. These are collectible, ageworthy, exclusive, and truly excellent. Somehow, though, at least for now, they’re extremely inexpensive compared to other top Burgundies from in and around Pommard.
About Claudie Jobard:
Claudie Jobard is a legitimate superstar. She was born to be a great wine-maker and has shown prodigal talent in addition. Claudie’s mother is renowned winemaker Laurence Jobard (she made the wines that made Domaine Drouhin famous). Claudie’s father ran a top Burgundy vine nursery and helped in planting countless great Burgundy vineyards. Claudie now makes wines for some of our favorite estates in Burgundy. She’s so talented that she was selected to the prestigious, high-profile position of head winemaker for the revered Maison Remoissenet of Beaune.
Some of our favorite Burgundies of all, though, are the great Burgundies she makes for two tiny, less-heralded, less-expensive family owned properties. One has her own name, the other has the name of her Grandfather, Gabriel Billard.
About 2015 in Burgundy:
You should be stockpiling 2015 Burgundies! It’s a sensational Burgundy vintage. The Wine Advocate rated the vintage 94 points in the Côtes de Beaune. Wine Enthusiast said 95 points. But that’s not the whole story. It’s a rare vintage with wines that achieved excellent ripeness and sweet fruit without sacrificing any aromatic complexity or freshness. Add in impressive concentration and perfectly balanced ripe tannins, and it’s easy to see why many critics seem to be trying to outdo each other in praising the 2015 Burgundy vintage.
Arrowine’s Burgundy insider, Doug Rosen, was recently in Burgundy to evaluate the wines. Here are his thoughts:
“It’s not hype. It’s all true. The 2015s are the most complete, lush and forward reds from Burgundy I’ve ever tasted. They’re so precocious and utterly delicious they’ll be hard to resist on release. But don’t let the opulent fruit fool you; they’ll keep too. And they won’t close down like the 2005s. They have the upfront fruit of Oregon’s finest combined with the lacy, filigreed minerality that only comes from Burgundy. Wow! Take out a second mortgage!” –Doug Rosen, Arrowine
Allen Meadows of Burghound.com has written extensively about the great 2015 vintage. If you’re a Burgundy enthusiast, I encourage you to subscribe and read all he has to say. He breaks down individual sub-regions and explains the growing conditions and what to expect in the wines. To generalize, here’s is view of the overall quality….
“2015 – A Great Vintage, Indeed the Greatest Since the Legendary 2005 …Hot and dry worked in 2015 because it is a genuinely great vintage and it’s a great vintage from top to bottom.” –Allen Meadows, Burghound.com #65, Jan. 2017.
If you want great Côte de Beaune red Burgundy from 2015, you won’t find better in the price range than these Pommards made by Claudie Jobard. Load up! But don’t wait. They will sell out.
Fewer than 200 cases were made of the this gorgeous Pommard. It comes from 55+ year old vines in the excellent “Les Vaumuriens” vineyard, located on the Pommard hillside directly above Pommard’s famed “Les Rugiens 1er Cru” vineyard near the Volnay border. This high vineyard produces wines of great intensity and complexity. Production is miniscule. We’re grateful for our allocation, one of largest in the world, but there still won’t be anywhere near enough wine. This is a vineyard that, in great years like 2015, makes wines that rival (and often exceed) many Premier Crus. Act fast.
Here’s how it tastes: This is the greatest “Vaumuriens” yet! Think concentration and body like the 2012 or even 2005 combined with purity and freshness like 2010 or 2014!
It has very deep ruby color as well as excellent concentration and impeccable refinement and elegance. With an expressive floral nose of violets, dark cherries and red berries this is beautifully and intensely perfumed. The palate shows the dense, rich core of fruit that good Pommards always show, but with an elegance and delicacy around the core that only great, usually 1er Cru, Pommards show (and only in great years). The flavors are deep, pure and expressive, with cherry/raspberry fruit, and a wonderful spice and mineral nuance. This starts out “pretty” then it actually builds on the palate to “deep and gorgeous”. This offers an intense, pure and beautiful drinking experience today. It will be hard to resist drinking it now, but please be patient. Experience shows this will develop nuance and become fleshier and more textured over the next two to three years. Then you can enjoy it at peak over the following half decade at least.
2015 Domaine Gabriel Billard Pommard 1er Cru “Les Charmots”
The tiny (0.40 hectare) plot where this is grown is in the heart of the famous slope of Pommard premier cru vineyards between the village of Pommard and Beaune toward the top of the hill. This is a top level burgundy. Collectors clamor over wines like this, but usually pay much more. Don’t wait though, availability is tiny and strictly limited. This sells out every year and this is a special year.
Here’s how it tastes: More muscular and dense, yet even more refined than the Vaumuriens, this is fantastic 1er Cru Pommard. From a vintage known for full, balanced and expressive wines, this hits all the right notes and shows remarkable depth and concentration. The aromas saturate the olfactory senses with ripe black cherries, blackberries, and intense blue flowers. The palate has the classic Pommard cherries and berries along with a deep red licorice nuance and a touch of stone dust mineral. What really sets it apart, though, is the mouthfeel. This is substantial and palate-clinging wine. What Burgundy lovers describe as “pinot sap” makes this linger very long on the finish. The supple tannic structure suggests this will reach peak expressiveness in 3 to 5 years and hold at that level for at least 6 or 7 additional years. If you love pinot noir and the way it expresses itself in Burgundy, don’t miss this wine. Less than 100 cases are usually made, though. Arrowine gets a great allocation, but it never lasts. They’ll disappear in minutes in a great vintage like 2015. Don’t wait to order.
Again, to order, just call Arrowine. We’re at 703-525-0990 (Arlington, VA) or 202-785-0785 (Washington, DC). Please call the location where you would like to pick up your order. Mix or match the two wines for best pricing (for example an order of 8 bottles of one wine and 4 of the other would be charged at the lowest 12+ bottle price for both wines). The wines arrive tomorrow, Wednesday, January 24th, 2018. Sale prices are good for one week or until supplies sell out (we expect a sellout).
Thank you for taking the time to read about these truly great red Burgundy values from the great 2015 vintage.
