An Arrowine Exclusive: 2014 Il Palagio Chianti Classico

The special Il Palagio Chianti Classico comes from a small, family-run, third-generation winery in the “sweet spot” of Chianti Classico. Their winery is in the famed Chianti village of Panzano and their estate vineyards are in Panzano’s world-famous “Conca d’Oro” (“Golden Valley”). This renowned section of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico zone is home to superstars of Tuscan wine, including Fontodi and Castello dei Rampolla.

To find Chianti Classico under $20 per bottle is unusual. To find estate-bottled, top-quality Chianti Classico from select vineyards in the Conca d’Oro under $20 is a rare opportunity.

About the Il Palagio estate:

Azienda Agricola Il Palagio was founded in 1969 by Dario Piccini. It is now run by his granddaughter, Monia Piccini, and her husband, Franco Guarducci, along with talented winemaker Marco Chellini. It is fabulously located near the village of Panzano’s famed “Conca d’Oro”, in the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG, equidistant from Florence and Siena.

They make wine exclusively from their 7.5 hectares of estate vineyards. Each of their vineyard plots is in a privileged location. They’re at 400 to 500 meters of elevation and have rocky, clay-schist Galestro soil. The estate is focused almost entirely on growing extremely high-quality sangiovese (they have one small merlot plot). They work the vineyards by hand, diligently and uncompromisingly, to the extent that they call their vineyards their “second home”. They’ve gotten to know, in Monia’s words, “each stone, every plant.”

Their hands-on, labor-intensive, quality-focused vineyard practices mean they don’t need chemical treatments. They’ve been 100% organic for over a decade (and certified by ICEA since 2010). Their vinifications are precise and clean, with a focus on translating the pure expression of vineyard and vintage into the bottle. Their diligent work in the vineyard and cellar allows them to bottle their wines without filtration.

The winery and vineyards are under a mile from Fontodi (who’s top-rated wines Arrowine’s clients have been enjoying for over a decade). Il Palagio’s wines, including this Chianti Classico, their “Ignobile” blend, and even their top level Chianti Classico Gran Selezione are of exceptional quality, and they are among the finest values in all of Tuscany. The estate’s wines are admired for their aromatic expressiveness, concentration, and purity.

A note on the “Azienda Agricola Il Palagio” name:

Be aware that at least three different wineries in Tuscany include “Il Palagio” in their name! This is Azienda Agricola Il Palagio. It is a small family winery with wonderfully located vineyards in Panzano’s Conca d’Oro, in the heart of Chianti Classico. This is not Tenuta Il Palagio, which gets attention in the media for being owned by the musician Sting. This also is not the larger Fattoria Il Palagio from San Gimignano.

More about the 2014 Il Palagio Chianti Classico:

Il Palagio grew the fruit for this wine in their family-owned estate vineyards on two adjacent hillsides just to the west of the village of Panzano in Chianti. It is 100% sangiovese and 100% hand harvested. Marco Chellini fermented the selected fruit in stainless steel tanks for 12-18 days. The cap was submerged for gentle extraction, and there were frequent délestages.

The wine was then racked into medium-sized oak barrels for 12-18 months of aging, followed by an additional 12 months of aging in the bottle before release. The result is a pure and exacting expression of sangiovese grown in some of Chianti Classico’s finest, best located vineyards. Fewer than 1,500 cases were produced.

Here’s how it tastes:

This Chianti Classico has bright ruby red color. It has expressive aromas of dried flowers, red berries, cherry pits, and sage. In the cooler 2014 vintage, this emphasizes expressive, medium-bodied, pretty red fruit and spice character. The palate shows raspberries and cherries combining with sweet spices. The finish is long-lasting, pure, balanced and complex with subtle oak smoothing the fine tannins. This is a very food-versatile wine. Delicious with poultry, beef, or pasta, it will also shine when paired with grilled meats or sausages. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.

This tiny boutique estate rarely submits wines for review. If you have any of the “Ignobile”, try a bottle! The style is similar, but this Chianti Classico comes from lower yields and finer vineyard locations.

Again, to order please call either Arrowine location to order. Thank you for taking the time to read about this delicious Tuscan red from some of Chianti Classico’s best vineyard locations.
