I know of few other reds under $20 that offer as much complexity and depth as the Château Jouclary “Cuvee Tradition” does at just $11.99. The value in this wine is just amazing–some of the best in the wine world. It’s been a perennial customer and staff favorite for over a dozen years straight. These guys get it right every year.

But in some years, it’s even better. The new 2015 vintage is especially great. It is just a little fuller, deeper and richer than other Jouclary vintages. And it remains complex, fresh, pure and balanced. You’ll understand that this is a special vintage with one taste. And you’ll really appreciate it as you enjoy the whole bottle.

About Cabardès:

Cabardès is a wine-grape growing region. It’s located just outside the medieval walled city of Carcassonne, in the south west corner of France (just to the west of Minervois). The Cabardès area is unusual in that it is influenced by both the sun of the Mediterranean and the cool moderating winds from the Atlantic. As such, it is the only AOC appellation (officially recognized quality wine growing region) that requires the use of both Bordeaux (Atlantic) and Rhone (Mediterranean) grape varieties in the blend.

Good Cabardès wines combine the best of Bordeaux and Rhone. It means you’ll feel the depth and velvety structure of a fine right-bank Bordeaux. Plus, you’ll taste the bright berry fruits and spice of a good Rhone red. Yes, it has all that depth, generous mouthfeel, and complex fruit, spice and mineral flavors. And yet it’s a wine that is smooth enough to just drink by itself. This all means it’s a stunning value at our regular price of $11.99 (or even at the $15-20 price it frequently sells for elsewhere). And that’s especially true in excellent years like 2015.

About Château Jouclary and their Cabardès “Cuvée Tradition”:

Robert Gianesini acquired Jouclary in 1969 and added to the property in 1990. Robert’s son Pascal now runs the 60 ha estate.

The Cuvée Tradition is an un-oaked blend of about 30% merlot, 30% cabernet franc, 20% syrah and 20% grenache. Gianesini grows each variety in the type of soil that allows for ideal varietal expression. That’s possible because of Jouclary’s multiple distinct soil types. Merlot and cabernet franc thrive in the estate’s heavier clay soils. The syrah and the outstanding 70 year old grenache vines prosper in the lighter sandy limestone soils. Gianesini aged this wine in concrete tanks to enhance the texture without adding oaky flavors. This wine truly reflects the special place and special vineyards where it is grown.

How does it taste?

This deep ruby colored wine leads with black raspberry fruit, floral and spice box aromas I associate with old-vine grenache. It also has black cherry and herb nuances from the Bordeaux varieties. On the palate, red flame plum, currants and dried cherries round out the fruit expression. At the same time, subtle flavors of herbs and spice add fascinating complexity. The wine has a supple velvety texture (from the syrah and merlot?) and a delicious lingering finish. There’s a lot going on in this wine. It has far more complexity than other wines at this price.

Jouclary is amazingly versatile with food. It even works all on its own. Fancy foods, simple foods, hearty dishes, light dishes, cassoulet, pasta, chicken, lamb, you name it. Serve this beautiful bargain with anything!
