You’ll want to order the outstanding 2016 vintage of the stellar, single-vineyard, 100% chardonnay Mâcon-Villages white Burgundy from Domaine Fichet by the case! The 2015 vintage was our top selling white Burgundy of the year. Repeat sales were exceptionally high (a sure sign that customers loved it). And this 2016 is even better!
This impressed us with one taste, and we’re not the only ones. The 2016 “Crépillionne” Mâcon Villages has already won some important awards, including a Silver Medal at the Concours Saint Vincent Mâcon 2017 Competition and a Bronze Medal at the Concours des Vins de Mâcon 2017.
This white Burgundy, from the “Crépillionne” vineyard, has won countless awards since it was first produced in 1992. In the 2016 vintage, a late frost and violent hailstorms in April meant that yields in the Maconnais were naturally extremely low, while quality was very high. That quality is apparent from the very first taste of this 2016. It’s a year that delivers whites with excellent concentration and body, good ripeness and richness, and nice balancing freshness. It’s a terrific vintage and this white wine from the excellent “La Crépillionne” vineyard near the village of Igé in the Mâcon-Villages section of Burgundy shows it.
Here’s more about Domaine Fichet:
This excellent family-owned estate has excellent vineyards in the Mâconnais hills of southern Burgundy. Francis Fichet founded the Domaine in 1976.
The story is familiar. Francis was a grape grower with pride, skill, ambition, and great vineyard plots near the village of Igé. He acted on his conviction that he could make much better wine from his terrific vineyards than the cooperative he’d been selling his grapes to. Fichet started his own winery and created his own labels. He proved he was right. Now he’s done it for 40 years!
Francis’ son Pierre-Yves joined the estate in 1988, and his son Olivier joined in 1990. The two brothers now run the Domaine and have added quality vineyards to the estate over the years. The family grew their estate from 11 hectares to about 35 over the decades.
The estate makes both white and red wine and has been bottling their excellent chardonnay from their “La Crépillionne” Vineyard plot as it’s own wine since 1992.
Here’s more about this white wine:
This excellent white Burgundy came entirely from the “La Crépillionne” Vineyard. This 3 hectare vineyard has mature chardonnay vines growing in terrific stony limestone clay soils with south, south-east exposure. Many of the vines were planted in the early 1990s by the Fichet brothers. They are now over 20 years of age. After harvest, the grapes were carefully sorted so that only top quality fruit was used.
Winemaking began with a light cold-maceration. The winemaker de-stemmed the fruit prior to pressing it gently and slowly in a gentle pneumatic air-press. He vinifies carefully, in controlled temperature vats. The Fichet brothers use no oak for fermentation or aging this wine. They believe this vineyard’s grapes produce a complete wine without oak. They want this wine to express the purity and freshness of this vineyard’s chardonnay.
And here’s how it tastes:
The 2016 Domaine Fichet Mâcon-Villages “La Crépillionne” has very pale lemon-pulp color with subtle green reflections. This 100% chardonnay white burgundy has fragrant aromas of apple blossoms, ripe pears and orange zest. On the palate this is beautifully ripe and refreshing. The ripe pear and citrus fruit is balanced beautifully. This has the ripe and opulent fruit typical of the low-yielding 2016 vintage while keeping a nice energetic spine of fresh acidity and chalky limestone minerality. This is impressive white Burgundy that will pair nicely with grilled fish, shrimp pasta, casseroles, poultry, fresh cheeses and veggies. At this price, you could even serve it at a party. Or get an extra case to take on your spring beach trip. It’s a deal worth loading up on!
This is a nice find at $19.99 per bottle. At an E-mail Sale price as low as $14.99, you’ll want to load up and enjoy this over the next couple of years.
