The depth, body, concentration and character of this big, bold red from the acclaimed Ribera del Duero region puts to shame just about any malbec or cabernet or shiraz on the market under $25. It’s no wonder it’s been so popular over the years. And now we have the truly terrific 2015 vintage. One case might not be enough!
This is a serious and outstanding red wine. It comes from two excellent vineyards with vines averaging over 60 years of age. These low-yielding old vines are 100% tinta del pais, the famous classic Ribera del Duero clone of Tempranillo that comprises many of Spain’s top red wines like Vega Sicilia, Aalto, Astrales and Pingus. Harvest was entirely by hand. Renowned winemaker Isaac Fernandez vinified the fruit and aged the wine in high-quality oak barrels.
Call soon to order and you can get the incredible 2015 vintage of this stunning red for just $14.99 per bottle by the case. The wine is fabulous and the price is exceptional for a wine with such depth, concentration and character. This is a wine that can easily age for half a decade or longer, developing additional nuance along the way.
The 2015 Finca La Mata was just released. We’ve only found review from one critic so far. Josh Raynolds, of Antonio Galloni’s Vinous, awarded it 91 points. That means it’s “Outstanding. A wine of remarkable personality and breed that is well worth seeking out.” The full review is below. This rating matches the highest “Vinous” rating yet for any vintage of Finca La Mata. There will be plenty of great reviews coming from other critics, I have no doubt. And, if you call today, you can order at a price matching the lowest sale price of our best sale on the 2013 and 2014 vintages.
More on Finca La Mata:
This wine is the result of an important project by famed winemaker Isaac Fernandez. Isaac is a star who’s made top wines in Ribera del Duero for over 25 years. For this project, Isaac paired with an admired grower. They are seeking to explore the vinous identity and potential of two outstanding old-vine vineyards. The goal: to create a wine that balances power, finesse, and purity with the capacity to age.
The vineyards are planted on a slope in the heart of Ribera del Duero, near the village of Gumiel de Mercado. The region’s richer river clay soils are on the low end of the slope, giving rich and powerful fruit. Higher on slope is sandy-pebbly soil, providing smaller berries with more structure and complexity. In 2015, this outstanding dual soil-type vineyard produced very low yields of intensely concentrated fruit. They harvested the fruit by hand and then sorted it at the winery. For this wine, they used only top-quality, highly concentrated, perfectly ripened fruit.
After he de-stemmed (for purity), gently crushed (for elegance), and pre-fermentation cold macerated (for deep color and aromatic complexity), Isaac fermented the wine with native yeasts (for complexity and depth). He kept it on the skins (for concentration) prior to racking it into oak barrels (80% French, 20% American) for eight months of aging (for complexity and regal texture). The resulting wine is deep, pure, amazingly concentrated and balanced. It easily competes with (and beats) far more expensive wines from around the world.
This incredible find comes to us from our friend Aurelio Cabestrero and his company, Grapes of Spain. This local (Lorton, VA) company has become one the United States’ most important suppliers of high quality Spanish wines. Arrowine has a long-standing relationship with Aurelio and Grapes of Spain. This means that our customers can get top Spanish wines that are too scarce to acquire elsewhere in the United States. It also means you can get them at the best prices in the country.
This wine is a great example. This highly acclaimed red wine is very hard to find throughout most of the USA (where it typically sells for $20-$22). It sells in our area for just $18.99 per bottle thanks to this excellent local importer. Our e-mail special allows you to get it for as little as $14.99 per bottle. That’s the lowest price we’ve seen for this wine anywhere in the country.
Here’s how this excellent 2015 Ribera Del Duero tastes:
The 2015 Finca La Mata has extremely deep, inky violet purple color. The pure and fragrant aromas jump from the glass showing raspberries, cherries, black plums, violets, and graphite minerality. The palate is ripe, dense, and pure with sweet raspberry and blackberry fruit enhanced by spice and mineral notes that grow as the wine airs. There are lithe and smooth tannins that give this a textured and important mouthfeel. The lengthy finish showcases the fruit and mineral notes. This is already a splendid bottle of wine. It promises to develop additional complexity over the next two years and then drink well for five additional years.
And here’s the review from Vinous:
“($19)(aged for eight months in 80 percent French and 20 percent American oak barrels, one-third of them new) Inky purple. Smoke-accented blue fruit and violet pastille aromas, along with hints of incense and licorice. Sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors smoothly blend richness and vivacity and pick up a spicy nuance as the wine stretches out. Closes smooth, long and appealingly sweet, featuring sneaky tannins and an echo of ripe blue fruit. Drink: 2020-2025. 91 points.” Josh Raynolds, Antonio Galloni’s Vinous, Jan. 2017.
