Here’s more on the great new 2015 vintage in Sonoma:

A quote from famed Sonoma winemaker Pat Henderson of Kenwood Vineyards appeared in the Wine Institute’s report 2015 California Winegrape Harvest: Early, Light and Exceptional Quality. It summed up the 2015 vintage wonderfully. He said: “While I wish we had more fruit, I couldn’t be happier with how things taste.” When describing the quality of the fruit, winemakers and critics used words like “exceptional” and even “magnificent”!

Everyone noted the high quality, but nearly everyone also noted that quantities produced were down considerably (25%-40% in most places) because the dry winter, early flowering, and cool spring. The result was fewer clusters and smaller berries (which made for deep color, intense aromas and terrific concentration).

Dan Fitzgerald, winemaker for the Bench wines said:

“The 2015 vintage offered excellent growing conditions. A mild winter and spring compounded with almost no rain contributed to early ripening, low to moderate yields and highly concentrated grapes resulting in exceptional quality. 2015 is one of the earliest vintages we’ve seen in over a decade, but it will also go down as one of the best.”

More about the 2015 Bench Chardonnay “Russian River Valley” (information from the winery):

Vineyard: The 2015 Bench Chardonnay “Russian River Valley” was sourced from two vineyards in the Russian River Valley, Louvau and Bazzano. These two vineyards are adjacent to one another and share many similarities. Both were planted in the late 1970s and have vines nearing 40 years of age. Both are planted to Clone 4 chardonnay, the “Louis Martini” clone. And both yield grapes with excellent balance of fruit, mineral and acidity.
Fermentation: Whole cluster pressed to tank and cold settled overnight then racked off heavy solids to tank and barrels. The tank was inoculated with a proprietary yeast, barrels were allowed to ferment with indigenous yeast. Malolactic was arrested to retain a bright, mineral style of wine.
Harvest Date: September 11th – 15th, 2015
Cooperage & Aging: 60% Stainless steel and 40% barrel fermented with 10% new French oak, aged for 11 months in Stainless steel and oak before bottling.
Bottling: August 2016   ABV: 13.6%
Winemaker’s Tasting Note: The 2015 Bench Chardonnay has a hue of pale straw yellow in the glass. The nose is reminiscent of fresh rainfall mixed with honey and orange blossom. The palate is crisp
and well textured with flavors of stone fruit and honeydew melon, complemented by a wet stone finish.

About the 2015 Bench Cabernet “Knight’s Valley”:

Vineyard: The 2015 Bench Cabernet Sauvignon “Knight’s Valley” comes entirely from the prestigious Totem Ridge Vineyard. The location is ideal– high in the western benchlands of the Mayacamas mountains in Sonoma’s famed Knights Valley AVA. This top location is in southern Knights Valley near the Chalk Hill AVA and the higher, better part of the large Alexander Valley AVA. The fruit comes from seven different excellent blocks, ideally located on a high, cool ridge but with different elevations and exposures. Many highly acclaimed (and far more expensive) wines use fruit from the excellent Totem Ridge Vineyard. It was planted over 25 years ago under the guidance of the late Paul Vander Schalie. This renowned viticulturist established many of the Knights Valley’s most prestigious vineyards, including vineyards for both Beringer and Peter Michael.
Fermentation: The grapes were 100% de-stemmed, then transferred by gravity to stainless steel fermentation tanks. After a long cold soak, the must was allowed to warm and ferment with indigenous yeast. After a steady fermentation to complete dryness, the new wine stayed on the grape skins for an extended maceration to develop mouthfeel and structure. The wine was pressed off 21 days after it went into tank. Malolactic fermentation was left to complete indigenously.
Harvest Date: October 4th – 18th, 2015.
Cooperage & Aging: Winemakers Dan Fitzgerald and Nicole Michael elected to age the concentrated wine for 16 months in 100% French oak barrels (45% of which was new).
Bottling: March 2017   ABV: 13.8%
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: The 2015 Bench Cabernet Sauvignon “Knight’s Valley” exudes a deep purple color in the glass, the nose is rich with black berry reduction, toasted pumpkin seed and a touch of vanilla spice. The palate is elegantly wound with dusty tannins and supple, silky texture. A long, seamless finish is complemented with flavors of black plum, cocoa and forest loam.

A little more about Bench wines:

Bench wines are made at the family-owned Brack Mountain Wine Company by winemaker Dan Fitzgerald (along with assistant Nicole Michael). They use only first-class fruit sourced from top quality vineyards and make wines that let the quality of the fruit show through. This team is used to making far more expensive wines. Fruit from these same vineyards (both the chardonnay and cabernet) has, in earlier vintages, gone into wines that sell for $50 per bottle (or more).

The excellent 2015 vintage allowed them to source enough top quality fruit from these exceptional vineyards to craft these distinctive and great-quality wines: a Russian River Valley Chardonnay and a Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. By being picky in their fruit selection, they were able to craft outstanding wines usually sell for only about $24 per bottle.

We’ve done even better than that! We offer the excellent Chardonnay “Russian River Valley” and Cabernet Sauvignon “Knight’s Valley” regularly at just $21.99 per bottle. F0r this e-mail sale, we’re offering both for as little as $15.99 per bottle on a case (or more) mixed or matched however you like. Load up! At this price you can afford to drink great chardonnay and cabernet regularly. At this price you could even serve it at your spring parties for weddings or graduations or anything else!
