Jacques and Nathalie Saumaize are veteran winemakers and owners of some of the finest plots in Southern Burgundy’s Mâcon region. This area, and especially its Pouilly Fuisse sub-area, is world-famous for making distinctive and great chardonnays as well as great values.

In a terrific Wine Advocate article called The Maconnais: The White Burgundy You Can Afford, wine writer Neal Martin wrote:

“Slip a top-notch Pouilly-Fuissé into a line-up of preening Chardonnays from the Côte de Beaune and just watch your professional critic slip over their preconceptions because you can bet your bottom dollar that the tip-top Mâcon would embarrass several hallowed Premier Cru and perhaps even the occasional slipshod Grand Cru.”

He’s absolutely right, too. A friend drove his exact point home to me! He served me two white wines and didn’t say what they were. They were clearly both excellent, high-end white Burgundies. I was confident I was tasting two top-level Premier Crus from Puligny Montrachet. I thought one could be Grand Cru! After all, what else could have this richness, concentration, mineral purity, citric focus, and incredible vibrant length? My brain just didn’t go to the Mâcon area with the quality, intensity, precision and style I was experiencing. It should have! Both wines were from Pouilly Fuissé. And both were less than half the price of what I was sure was in my glass.

The three top wines of Domaine Jacques Saumaize available today are among the best wines of Pouilly-Fuissé. All three are clearly of (at least) Premier Cru quality. Prices, though, are considerably lower than the Premier Crus of the Cote de Beaune. It means they are some of the greatest values in the world for high-level, age-worthy, world-class white wine from the chardonnay variety. Order them for up to 40% off today!

Here’s more about Domaine Jacques Saumaize:

Jacques and Nathalie Saumaize’s winery is in Vergisson, the vinous hub of the Mâcon region. Anthony Saumaize, their son, joined them in 2012 after studying winemaking and working at other Burgundy properties as well as in South Africa. Their vineyard plots are located in Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Veran, plus some nearby Mâcon appellations.

The Saumaize family owns numerous tiny plots with very old vines. These low-yielding vines are a big reason the harvest entirely by hand (unlike most producers in the region). These regal old plots, combined with their almost-obsessive focus on quality, make their wines some of the region’s best. These are gorgeous, concentrated, precise and elegant white Burgundies and I cannot recommend them strongly enough.

The wines possess the incredible balance that can only come from carefully tended vines, exceptional vineyard locations, meticulous harvesting, and gifted wine-making.  Incredibly, today’s sale feature gives you the opportunity to order these wines at up to 40% off their great regular prices! It means you can get very high level, estate-bottled, single-vineyard white Burgundy from Pouilly Fuisse for as little as $26.99 per bottle.

When Jacques  and Nathalie took over the family’s vineyard holdings, they continued the family tradition. They are classic and unique Burgundian craftsman-winemakers. The Saumaize family lives by the adage that “great wine is made in the vineyard”.

The family does almost all of their vineyard work manually. They follow a laborious program in the vineyards to get the best fruit. Careful pruning is done by hand, as well as the trimming of superfluous buds. The family strips selected leaves to restrict yields and encourage ideal sun and wind exposure (for drying and freshness) and better ripening. They plough by hand. They use no chemical insecticides. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand. A careful sorting process follows and ensures that only top-quality grapes are used in their wines.

The reward for all this effort is clear. You’ll notice the quality in the powerful aromatics and on the intense, rich palate of the wines. These are lip-smacking, 100% chardonnay, white Burgundies. The Saumaize family has been tending vines in the Mâcon region for several generations.

About the vintage:

All three of these wines are from the excellent 2015 vintage. They will go fast. Critics are raving about this vintage. Quality is as high as any vintage in memory. Many producers have raised prices for their 2015s. These beauties from Saumaize haven’t gone up a penny. These are remarkable whites with great concentration and depth, impressive purity and very good acidity. They’re wonderful for drinking now and over the next several years.

Here’s more about the individual wines:

2015 Domaine Jacques Saumaize Pouilly Fuisse “Sur La Roche”

This comes from a wonderful vineyard plot called “Sur La Roche” (meaning “On the Rock”). This parcel is comprised of 50 year old vines clinging to the upper slopes of the famous Roche de Vergisson. This rock is the ancient chalky cliff face topping the hillside on which the village of Vergisson is located. The land is extremely steep and the soils are chalky clay with limestone and abundant rocks. This wine was vinified in 100% French oak casks (20% new) with an aging period of 10 months.

Here’s how it tastes: This wine is absolutely packed with concentration. The aromas start out shy but build as the wine airs bringing to mind spiced pears, citrus peel, honeysuckle, slate, and chalk. The dense, viscous palate has the mouthfeel of a top Cotes de Beaune Premier Cru showing creamy pear, peach and citrus-butter wrapped around a spine of pure minerals.  The finish has rich, ripe pit and pulp fruit along with citrus zest and minerals. Give this six months to a year in the bottle, then enjoy it over the next 4 years with your favorite recipe for fish in a savory sauce.

2015 Domaine Jacques Saumaize Pouilly Fuisse “La Maréchaude”

“La Maréchaude” is large for a Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard. It is on the hillside of the rock of Vergisson facing full south with marl, limestone shale, and rocky scree soil. This site gives fruit with intense aromatics, and tremendous richness and body. You could easily mistake this (except for the price) for a great Premier Cru. You may wonder if it’s Grand Cru. It was vinified and aged in French oak (20% new).

Here’s how it tastes: This has intense and floral aromas of ripe peaches, apples, citrus, chalk, tropical flowers and subtle vanilla. The flavors are ripe peaches, poached pears, lemon butter, citrus zest, and slate. This is impressively full and deep. The citrus, mineral and toast finish is extremely long. Give this until next spring for the flavors to fully integrate then enjoy it over the following 4-5 years.  The richness and intensity of this wine make it a natural for bacon-wrapped diver scallops, but it would also work great with any fish dish in a cream sauce.

2015 Domaine Jacques Saumaize Pouilly Fuisse “Les Courtelongs”

This has wonderful intensity and vibrant citrus and mineral character. From terrific plots located on clay-loam soils with a rocky, limestone clay layer on the surface, located on the eastern slopes of the Roche de Solutré, this shows the concentration and intensity of any Premier Cru. For this beautiful white wine, Saumaize vinifies 100% in French Oak (20% new) with aging for 10 months.

Here’s how it tastes: The vivid and intense bouquet brings to mind citrus blossoms, peaches, apricots, lime peel and chalk. The palate is rich and powerful with ripe pit fruit and citrus wrapped around a deep core of limestone minerality, citrus peel, and mouthwatering acidity. The balance is impeccable– this is a big, full, lush, ripe wine yet it comes across vibrant, even elegant– not at all flabby or heavy. The finish is remarkably long.  This is beautiful and intense today and promises to provide a fabulous drinking experience for at least the next five to six years.

Again, to order, just call Arrowine.  We’re at 703-525-0990 (Arlington VA) or 202-785-0785 (Washington DC). Please call the location where you would like to pick up your order. Thank you for taking the time to read about this top winery, their gorgeous 2015 Pouilly Fuissés, and our terrific e-mail sale.
