About Castello di Monsanto:

Here’s what Antonio Galloni of Vinous said recently about Castello di Monsanto:

“Castello di Monsanto is one of Tuscany’s most storied wineries. Fabrizio Bianchi was one of the first producers to believe in the concept of single-vineyard wines and Chianti Classico made with only Sangiovese. Today, Bianchi’s daughter, Laura, runs the property, while Andrea Giovannini makes the wines. For some reason, these wines don’t seem to get the recognition they deserve. The flagship Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Vigneto Il Poggio’ and Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Nemo Vigneto Il Mulino’ are terrific, but to be honest, the wine I find the most impressive is the Riserva, which delivers quality and personality at an exceedingly fair price.
–Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2018

The acclaimed wine estate of Castello di Monsanto began in the early 1960s. It is still the family property, and the pride, of the Bianchi family. Fabrizio Bianchi, the son of founder Aldo Bianchi, took this great and historic property and made it one of the most acclaimed wine estates in Tuscany. Laura, the third generation of the Bianchi family at the property, is now involved with running the estate.

About the 2013 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva:

The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva comes from a selection of grapes from top estate vineyards. The Bianchis select fruit for this wine from vineyard plots they believe will make wines capable of long-term cellaring and maturing. They vinified this estate fruit in steel tanks with skin maceration of about 20 days. They then aged the wine in oak barrels for about 18 months. After bottling, they even aged the wine at least three additional months before release.

This excellent Chianti Classico Riserva is prototypical Chianti in the property’s acclaimed full-bodied and clean, pure style. It is full of red fruit and spice with excellent length. There is plenty of ripe fruit with fresh (yet not at all harsh) acidity. This balances the fruit beautifully and makes the wine ready to pair with almost any meal. Match this with stews, with osso buco, with grilled chicken, or with braised or grilled beef or lamb. It is a textbook Chianti Classico blend of about 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino.

This wine is one of the most celebrated of all Chianti Classico Riservas. This 2013 vintage is wonderful– ripe, full-bodied, structured, and with great texture, great purity, and excellent length. Amazingly, the great 2013 vintage is the fourth time this wine was selected for the prestigious Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of the Year list! It joins the 2009, 2007 and 1995 vintages in earning this honor.

Here are just some of many commendations this Chianti Classico Riserva has received:

Antonio Galloni of Vinous wrote:

“($25) The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva is an absolute joy to taste. Sensual and layered in the glass, the 2013 is built on a total sense of finesse. Sweet floral notes, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers give the 2013 its super-classic profile. Still a bit tightly wound, this uber-classic 2013 will benefit from cellaring. Year in year out, this is one of my favorite Chianti Classicos in its price range. Drink 2018-2033. 91+ points.

–Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2016.

The Wine Spectator wrote:

“Pure cherry takes center stage, framed by tar, earth, tobacco and mineral elements. Vivid and elegant, showing fine intensity and equilibrium, with a lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2020. 91 points.” –Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, Sept. 30th, 2016.

Also this was designated a Wine Spectator “Smart Buy” at $25. And it was selected #58, Top 100 Wines of 2016.

The “Profile” on this wine for Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines edition said:

“#58 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 (91 points | $25 | Italy) Perched on the western edge of Chianti Classico, Monsanto has become a reliable producer of outstanding, well-priced Sangiovese. Fabrizio Bianchi bought the property in 1962 and now co-manages it with his daughter Laura. The Riserva comprises 90 percent Sangiovese with small portions of Canaiolo and Colorino, from the estate’s 178 acres of vines. The grapes are fermented in steel, then aged in French oak barriques for 18 months.”
