Grüner veltliner has arrived and you should know this white wine grape (if you don’t already). You cannot, now, have a conversation about the great white wine grapes of the world without mentioning grüner. And you cannot, now, go to a truly great restaurant, in New York or Paris or Hong Kong or Washington D.C., without encountering a list that includes at least a few quality grüners.
The 2016 Grüner Veltliner “Montem” comes from an excellent Dockner family estate-owned vineyard at the Göttweiger Mountain. This is an excellent site where warm air from the east meets the cooler air of the Dunkelsteiner Forest. The result is wines with both ripeness and freshness along with a pure and clean personality. The soils are loess, loam and gravel, giving the wine a distinct spice and mineral character.
How do you use a good grüner veltliner like the 2016 Dockner “Montem”?
Grüner is among the easiest white wines in world to enjoy and to pair with cuisine. A light chill will do, it doesn’t need to be ice cold. And grüner’s food-versatility is one reason (of many) it has become so popular in restaurants around the world. The wine you can order today, the 2016 Dockner Grüner Veltliner “Montem”, pairs beautifully with fish, shrimp cocktail, fried calamari, pasta with marinara sauce, pasta with garlic butter sauce, Tafelspitz (Austrian boiled beef), herb roasted chicken, fresh vegetables, or even with no food at all. It’s refreshing and complete enough to sip solo on the deck.
Here’s how it tastes:
This is pure, classic Austrian grüner veltliner. The color is very pale lemon pulp. It has fragrant aromas of apple and citrus fruit, flowers and spice. The flavors suggest yellow apples, orange pulp citrus, minerals, and grüner’s trademark varietal hint of refreshing white pepper. The finish is long, pure and refreshing. A single taste quickly leads to a second (or third) glass. It’s a food friendly white that is so complete it doesn’t even need food!
The Dockner Grüner Veltliner “Montem” from the great 2016 vintage presents these flavors in a classic style combining ripeness and freshness. The ABV is a moderate 12.5%. 2016 was a year of extremely low yields (due to a late frost) and cool temperatures. This allowed for great concentration and slow, complete ripening. It means the wines can have extraordinary aromatics, good concentration and terrific freshness. The official description of the vintage raves about “outstanding quality, characterized by particularly delicate fruit-driven aromatics and fresh acidity…”. It’s a vintage that has both the aromatic and flavor complexity to appeal to Austrian wine experts, and the ripe fruit to make the wines enjoyable for everyone. Don’t miss this terrific grüner veltliner. You’ll love the medium body and the long palate-caressing finish of this 100% un-oaked white.
A Note on the Bottle:
The Dockner estate chose to bottle this quality grüner in large 1.0 Liter bottles. That’s a big benefit! It’s 33% more wine than a standard 750 ML bottle! Ounce per ounce, that means buying this at our great $9.99 per bottle E-mail Sale price is like paying just $7.49 per bottle for a regular size bottle. And this is complex, deeply flavored, refreshing white wine from the important grüner veltliner variety!
This size is convenient, too. Cook with a cup of quality wine to enhance your recipe perfectly; you’ll still have a full bottle’s worth to enjoy with the meal. Or share the larger bottle with another wine lover and both of you can enjoy an extra glass (believe me, you’ll want it!) since there are two full extra four ounce glasses of wine in each bottle! You can even serve it at a party and you’ll have fewer bottles to open (and this has a convenient screw-cap closure).
Again, to order please call Arrowine. We’re at 703-525-0990 (Arlington, VA) or 202-785-0785 (Washington, DC). Please call the location where you would like to pick up your order. This wine arrives at Arrowine tomorrow, Friday August 4th. The E-mail Sale price is good for one week or until supplies sell out.
