You are going to love this single-vineyard, estate-bottled white wine from Domaine d’Elise. It has rich, lush, ripe fruit flavors up front, balanced by excellent acidity and minerality that make for a long, lip-smacking finish.

This has been a customer and store favorite for a decade. Critics have loved it, too. British wine writer Oz Clarke selected a recent d’Elise wine for his popular guide “250 Best Wines of the Year.”

About the 2016 vintage in Chablis:

The ultra-low yielding 2016 vintage was great for quality white Burgundy. In Chablis, yields for 2016 were about half of normal due to extremely difficult weather early in the growing season. The great conditions later in the year, though, meant that quality potential was outstanding. Wine Enthusiast rated the 2016 vintage in Chablis 95 points! That’s even higher than the highly-acclaimed 2015 vintage (94 points). In fact, this vintage rating is within one point of this publication’s highest rated vintage for the region ever (the stunning 96 point 2010 vintage). And they’ve rated every vintage since 1992 (that’s 25 vintages)!

Domaine d’Elise, one of our favorite estates in Chablis, excelled in 2016. Prices on many 2016 vintage Chablis whites are rising. We expect that when there’s a combination of great quality and very low volume! What’s surprising is to see a favorite wine from this great vintage at a terrific E-mail Sale price. Take advantage and stock up! You’ll want to go back to this white again and again over the next several years.

About Domaine D’Elise:

There are many reasons this Chablis is so good. A hugely important reason is the vineyard location. This comes from the d’Elise estate’s vineyard located adjacent to and above the famous Chablis Premier Cru Côte de Lechet vineyard.  The estate’s vineyard is unusual for Burgundy in that its entire 13 hectares are in one contiguous parcel.  The wine appellation laws of Chablis, however, have divided the vineyard into roughly equal sized plots. The estate labels one plot (on the steeper, mid-slope part of the vineyard) “Chablis.” They label the other plot “Petit Chablis”. The “Chablis” portions are on the better mid-slope parts of the vineyard.

The d’Elise vineyard’s soils are rocky limestone with an abundance of surface stones (as you can clearly see in the photo). This, combined with the cool Chablis climate, makes for small berries that produce very high quality, intensely flavorful, aromatically complex, minerally chardonnay. In short, this is great white Burgundy. And it’s a terrific bargain!

About the 2016 Domaine d’Elise Chablis:

The great location gives d’Elise a natural advantage. Other reasons this estate makes such terrific Chablis are in the diligent, quality-focused work in the vineyard and in the cellar. Domaine d’Elise was founded in 1970 and has been operated by the current owner, Frédéric Prain, since 1982. The estate winery is located just outside the town of Chablis in the commune of Milly.

Prain prunes and green-harvests throughout the year, by hand. This keeps the vineyard’s yields low. It assures that the grapes have excellent aromatic and flavor intensity.  Harvesting is delayed until the grapes are fully developed and optimally ripe. Domaine d’Elise’s harvest is, therefore, often later than other nearby growers. This shows in the fuller, richer, more concentrated character this wine shows on the front palate.

D’Elise followed the care in the vineyard and at harvest with diligent and careful quality-focused work in the cellar. Prain fermented the wine in temperature-controlled vats. After malo-lactic fermentation, d’Elise matured this Chablis for about ten months on its lees. This enhanced the wine’s texture and smoothed the intense and complex flavors. Prain took care to manipulate the wine as little as possible in order to retain the maximum freshness and full, vibrant, complex, flavor.

After vinification was complete, there was yet another quality-enhancing decision– the winemaker selected about half of the best vats of the vintage to bottle under the estate name “Domaine d’Elise”. The estate sold the other half to negociants. And, yes, the negociant labels made with wine from d’Elise’s “almost good enough” vats are selling at higher prices than this higher-quality, estate-grown, estate-bottled wine!

Here’s how the 2016 Domaine d’Elise Chablis tastes:

This pale lemon-pulp colored white wine has beautiful, expressive aromas of spiced bosc pears, citrus zest, white flowers, and flinty minerals. The flavors are ripe and round on the front palate with plenty of pear and lime fruit along with classic Chablis minerals. The fruit is full and ripe and there is vivid yet gentle acidity that makes the flavors stretch to a long and beautifully textured finish. The finish leaves a lasting sensation of pit fruit, citrus pith, and a clean, refreshing mineral note. The balance is impeccable– it’s intense but not heavy, vibrant but not sharp.

This has the wonderfully balanced, complex, and energetic personality that chardonnay from Chablis is famous for. This is a fabulously expressive and complex chardonnay at a terrific low price. It is wonderful today and promises to keep for at least 4-5 more years.  If you like trout or scallops, this is a must. But it’s also great with chicken, with a selection of young cheeses, or even all on its own.
